Four CPM leaders, including the local MLA,were assaulted allegedly by Trinamool Congress supporters at Subhasgram in South 24-Parganas district on Saturday night,in yet another incident of political violence after the Lok Sabha election in West Bengal.
Police said MLA Shyamal Naskar,CPM zonal secretary Kajal Dey and two local leaders Tapan Bhattacharya and Sushanta Ghosh were severely beaten up and the windshields of their car broken by some men at Chanditala More.
Naskar blamed the Trinamool Congress for the attack and said it was premeditated to scare Left Front activists in the area.
The incident occurred after they attended a street meeting in the area on price rise and alleged lawlessness in Bengal.
While Bhattacharya and Ghosh were taken to hospital,Naskar and Dey straightway went to Sonarpur police station to file an FIR where they named some Trinamool activists for the attack.
The injured duo then went to hospital for treatment.
CPM state secretary Biman Bose today slammed Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, alleging that the attack on his partymen was organised despite the railway minister asking her followers to maintain a humble and polite demeanor.
The Chanditala incident has once again proved that the Trinamool does not want to shun its strategy of creating violence and chaos, said Bose.
Meanwhile,Trinamool district leader Manab Sarkar said,I am not sure whether any of our party supporters was involved in the incident. There are public grievances against CPM leaders everywhere in the state. This incident was a result of public resentment against such unpopular leaders.
