CPM men open fire at Cong workers,2 hurt

CPM workers today allegedly opened fire at a group of Congress workers injuring two while they were on their way to file nominations at Khargram in Murshidabad district.

Murshidabad Superintendent of Police Humayun Kabir said: “We have arrested seven persons who were involved in the incident. Raids have also been carried out several villages for seizing arms.”

Tension also gripped the Domkal area in the district after the CPM and Congress supporters clashed in the area in which three persons were injured.

Meanwhile,two factions of Trinamool workers clashed with each other when some party candidates went to file nomination at the SDO office in Bolpur. Police resorted to lathicharge on them workers and chased them away.

Sources in the CPM said eight party candidates at Raina in Burdwan were kidnapped after they filed their nominations. CPM district secretary Amol Haldar said,”Police were silent spectators.”

More arrests in TMC leader’s murder

Five Trinamool workers have been arrested for the murder of Trinamool Congress leader Dulal Tanti at Sadarbazzar area in Barrackpore. The TMC leader was killed yesterday by a rival faction,said a police official. However,Shibu Jadav,a TMC leader in the area and prime accused in the case,is still absconding. Sources in the Trinamool said Jadav was expelled from the party on the Chief Minister’s order.

Poll panel chief briefs Governor on security

State Election Commissioner Meera Pandey met Governor M K Narayanan Saturday and reportedly briefed him about the security situation during the nomination process for the panchayat polls.

The State Election Commission has been flooded with complaints relating to filing of nomination papers. According to Commission officials,over 400 complaints have been filed so far. “Since last night,complaints have come in from East and West Midnapore,North 24-Paraganas,Burdwan and Cooch Behar. Most of the complaints are from the CPM. There are a few from the TMC and other other political parties as well,” said Commission secretary Tapas Ray. He said most of the complaints related to forcible withdrawal of nominations.

The Commission is also known to be keeping tabs on places where party candidates apart from the ruling party’s could not file nomination. “If the number is found to be abnormal,we will take necessary steps,” said a senior official of SEC.
