The Congress unit suffered another defection blow as it lost control over Coopers Camp Municipality in Nadia district with all its members deserting the party to join the ruling Trinamool Congress.
Controlled by the Congress until now,10 of its municipal board members joined the TMC in presence of party general secretary Mukul Roy who handed over party flags to them. TMC had one member in the 12-man board.
The latest setback to Congress comes days after the party lost Sainthia Municipality in Birbhum district (which it had held for 15 years) and Krishnagar Municipality in Nadia district to the TMC because of defections.
During the last two-and-a-half years, people have seen how our government is working and they want to join the movement. We welcome them to our party fold, Roy said.
He continued: Not only Congress, councillors from Left Front are also joining us after being attracted by development initiatives and good governance of the government headed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The councillors of Coopers Camp were all followers of Shankar Singh, former Congress MLA and party strongman of Ranaghat area in Nadia district.
Singh, however, described the TMCs move to woo party councillors to switch sides as unethical, even alleging that it was being done through money. The TMC is spending money to engineer defections, he said.
West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Pradip Bhattacherjee said the party has asked district chiefs to keep watch on councillors to prevent any further defections.
