The Congress is still hopeful that it will get the Trinamool Congress’s support for its Presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee,Congress general secretary in charge of Bengal Shaqueel Ahmed said on Wednesday. At a meeting with party MLAs,Ahmed said that one reason behind the hope was that none of the Trinamool Congress leaders had made any adverse remark against Mukherjee regarding his candidature.

“Our MLAs are very happy that a son of the soil has been fielded by the party for the post. The people of Bengal are elated. We are hopeful that all like-minded parties will vote for him. Pranabda has already said his sister Mamatadi will support him. In a democracy, suggesting a name is neither undemocratic nor unwanted. We solicit votes from all the parties,” Ahmed said after the meeting at the Asembly.

Mukherjee will be in Kolkata on July 9 to meet CPM,Forward Bloc and Congress legislators.
