The Congress Legislature Party today sent a message to the AICC requesting it to take a decision on the withdrawal of Rajya Sabha nomination of Congress candidate Abdul Mannan.

The sending of the fax message followed a flurry of activities in both Kolkata and AICC offices in Delhi, with Congress vote managers making permutations and combinations on the possibility of Mannan’s win.

In Delhi,Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee got into a huddle with AICC observer for West Bengal Shakeel Ahmed,AICC election observer for West Bengal Ramchandra Kuntia and Pradesh Congress Committee president Pradip Bhattacharya and discussed the various possibilities.

Coming to the conclusion that Mannan’s prospects were bleak, they asked the CLP whether Mannan should withdraw nomination.

“We sent the ball back to their court. We told them that they had better take a decision as we are of the opinion that the Congress candidate can win,” Mohammad Sohrab,CLP leader, told The Indian Express.

In the Assembly, the Congress has 42 members and they can get the support of independent member Hamidur Rahman. Still, they are in need of five more votes for their candidate to scrape through.

On the other hand, the Trinamool Congress has the capacity to see three of its candidates win,but for its fourth candidate it still needs 10-11 members.
