The Congress has alleged that its candidates are being threatened and supporters intimidated by Trinamool goons in various wards of Haldia municipality, highlighting the rift between the alliance partners in the run-up to civic polls on June 3.
The Congress leadership had recently complained to the State Election Commission and the state government about Trinamool-sponsored terror and demanded action to hold free and fair elections.
Trinamool-backed goons are visiting the houses of our cadres and supporters and threatening them. Action is not being taken against the perpetrators. Though the hapless administration is responding to our appeal, not much is being done to stop Trinamool cadres from flexing their muscles, Asit Ranjan Pal,president of East Midnapore District Congress Committee, said.
Pal said four Congress candidates had been forced to withdraw their nominations and the party was not allowed to field candidates in some other wards. Such activities from Trinamool, which is our partner in the Centre and state,is not acceptable, he said.
The Trinamool rubbished the allegations and alleged that the Congress had joined hands with the CPM to gift the municipality to the Leftists.
Trinamool leader Subhendu Adhikary said his party will establish absolute supremacy in all 26 wards of Haldia municipality in the June 3 election.
Last week,Trinamool activists and goondas attacked the house of Congress candidate Jharna Giri, who is contesting from ward No 25 in Haldia municipality. Her husband Mahitosh Giri, election agent Manojit Padia,Mangal Bera and several other Congress workers were mercilessly beaten up by the Trinamool supporters. Several of them were admitted in hospitals of Tamluk and Kolkata with serious injuries, the Congress alleged.
WBPCC president and Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pradip Bhattacharya and Lok Sabha MP Deepa Das Munshi condemned the attack, saying terror sponsored by Trinamool is the same as the terror sponsored by the CPM which we have seen in the last 34 years. The police are not taking any action against the Trinamool culprits, they alleged.
WBPCC secretary Manoj Pandey was reportedly kidnapped by Trinamool activists on the eve of the closing of nomination day allegedly in an attempt to stop the Congress from contesting the Haldia municipal election.
