A 6-year-old child got bitten by a snake within the premises of a government-run school in the Bhowanipore area of Kolkata on Monday morning.
According to school sources, the child, a student of Class 1, was bitten during the tiffin break at around 8.30 am. The student was admitted to SSKM Medical College and Hospital, and the condition of the child was reported to be stable.
School authorities informed that classes for primary students are held on the second and third floors of the building. But during tiffin break, students go down to the first floor to play. It is believed that the snake bit the child’s right hand at that time.
The authorities added that the snake could not be located till noon.
Principal Soma Das told media persons that they will be checking a room on the first floor which usually remains shut, besides again thoroughly searching other parts of the school.
Meanwhile, a source at the hospital said, “The child has been kept in the paediatric ward. It is not yet known whether there is poison in his body or not. Hospital sources said that a blood sample has been sent for testing. Once the report comes, it will be clear whether the snake was poisonous or not.”
Reacting to the incident, a parent of a child who studies at the school said, “This is very scary. We send our children to school under the watchful eyes of the teachers, but if this happens, then it is shocking. How did the snake enter the premises?”
Another parent said, “It has been raining a lot, which is probably why the snakes are coming out, but then the school should also keep the place clean so that there are no hiding spots for the snakes.”
