Dhaniakhali: Former state minister and Forward Bloc leader Naren Dey and former party MLA Ajit Patra were allegedly assaulted today by Trinamool Congress activists here in Hooghly. Several district Forward Bloc members had assembled in the local Madanmohantalla party office for a workers’ meet. While the meeting was underway,a section of TMC activists barged inside with bamboo sticks and bricks and attacked the workers,a local Forward Bloc leader alleged. Dey,Patra and four other party workers were left injured. Denying the allegations,TMC MLA Ashima Patra said that bloc activists had passed lewd comments during a rally of TMC women workers this afternoon,which had raised tempers. “But no one attacked them,” she said. Officer-in-charge of Dhaniakhali police station Ashim Sarkar said,“Forward Bloc did not seek permission to hold the workers’ meet. We have received a complaint from the TMC and are investigating the matter.”

Suspect in Sarada Devi relic theft case arrested

Kolkata: A suspect was Sunday arrested in connection with the theft of Sarada Devi relics from Belur Math in July this year,the police said. “We have arrested one suspect who was involved in other theft cases as well. There is nothing concrete against him,though. Investigation is on,” Howrah Police Commissioner Ajay Ranade told PTI. He,however,did not disclose the suspect’s name and also said that no relics have been recovered.

Tea garden worker dies of malnutrition

JALPAIGURI: A tea garden worker died of malnutrition in a closed tea garden at Banarhat in Jalpaiguri,sources said Sunday. Jhamru Kharia (40) died Saturday night at Red Bank Tea Garden owing to lack of regular meal and malnutrition,Dhupguri MLA Mamata Roy said. The tea garden has been lying closed since October 19 when its owner and other staff fled without paying workers their dues,officials said. Five workers of the tea garden died of malnutrition last month and 800 workers lost their jobs after the tea garden was shut.
