Chinese man held with red sandalwood

Over 25 kg of red sandalwood was seized today from a Chinese national at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose international airport.

Over 25 kg of red sandalwood was seized today from a Chinese national at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose international airport. Lee Xing Yung,who was on his way to Kunming in China,was arrested under Wildlife Protection Act and Foreign Trade Act by the officials for the illegal possession of 25.9 kg of red sandalwood which he was carrying in his luggage bag.

“Red sandalwood (trading of which is banned in India) is worth Rs 1,000 per kg here,but the seized quantity could easily fetch around Rs 1 crore in international market. There is a huge demand for sandalwood in China,” said an official of Air Intelligence Unit. The official added that a similar consignment was seized about a fortnight ago where another Chinese national Zhen Mao Huang was arrested for illegally carrying 98 kg of red sandalwood.

Yung would be produced before the Barasat Court tomorrow. In the last one month,custom officials have seized several consignment. On November 11,a Kerala resident was caught with 65 gm of gold which he was carrying inside a torch. Around 24 kg of gold worth over Rs 7 crore was found kept in a bag inside the washroom of a plane. The cargo department recovered another 3.5 kg gold worth over Rs 1 crore on November 23 during security checks.
