Calcutta HC seeks report from higher education dept on Jadavpur University security revamp

THE CALCUTTA High Court on Tuesday directed the West Bengal Higher Education Department to file a report regarding the necessity and manner of deploying security personnel inside the Jadavpur University (JU) campus and the steps taken by the state to disburse the required grants in connection with the the installation of CCTVs on campus.

A Division Bench of Justices Sujoy Paul and Smita Das De was hearing a Public Interest Litigation regarding the security and safety of the university. The counsel for JU, Ritzu Ghoshal, submitted, “There was a meeting of the executive counsel on August 11.”

The university conducted a survey and said the University needs around Rs 65 lakh for setting up CCTVs on campus. “We approached the State for the grants. A Communication will be sent to the Higher Education Dept of West Bengal for funds,” Ghoshal submitted.

The Division Bench observed, “The university is to file an affidavit about the meeting and the resolution taken in it and the locations identified for the CCTV installation. Further communication by the University to the state will have to be filed with the affidavit as well.”
