A day before campaigning ends for the civic polls at 91 municipalities across the state, a Trinamool Congress worker, Apel Sheikh, was shot down by another party member at Keturam in Burdwan district.
The police suspect that the murder was a result of intra-party feud between groups of Birbhum TMC president Anubrata Mondal and Ketugram MLA Sheikh Shahnawaz.
At about 9 am, a group of about 10 TMC workers came to Kumorpur Hattala area of Ketugram and pumped several rounds of bullets on Apel outside his home, police said. Apel, known to be close to Anubrata Mondal, was rushed to Katwa sub-division hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Apel is suspected to have been killed by followers of the local Panchayat Samiti head and TMC member Zahirul Sheikh, who belonged to Shahnawaz’s camp.
When contacted, Zahirul, said he had no knowledge of the incident. “I was going to attend a disaster management committee meeting. I have no idea how he was killed,” he said.
Superintendent of Police, Burdwan said, “We are investigating into the matter. No one has been arrested yet.”.
