Baby theft at RG Kar: 4 guards suspended

Kolkata:Four security guards of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital were suspended on Sunday following the theft of a baby from the gynaecology ward on Saturday night. Police have drawn the sketch of the woman who allegedly took the baby on the pretext of showing it to a doctor but never returned. According to hospital sources,a mentally-ill woman,Morjina Bibi,gave birth to a male child,a few days ago. Being mentally ill,Morjina’s mother Saliah was allowed to accompany the infant in the gynaecology ward. On Saturday night,while Morjina went to washroom,a woman approached Saliah and took the baby saying he needed to be shown to the doctors since he was crying. However,the woman never returned. The woman was not even caught on CCTV camera. Police probing the case are also looking into the security lapses.

Camel smuggler killed in BSF firing

Malda:A camel smuggler was killed in BSF firing at Mahadipur area of the Indo-Bangladesh border in Malda district,BSF sources said on Sunday. BSF personnel patrolling the border Saturday night found some men smuggling camel and ordered them to stop. But the smugglers,instead of stopping,attacked them,forcing the BSF personnel to open fire in which one smuggler identified as Battu Sheikh (30) died,sources said. The other smugglers fled but the BSF personnel managed to catch eight camels.

NBSTC to reintroduce double decker bus

Cooch Behar:An old double-decker bus of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation is going to hit the roads on Monday,NBSTC sources said on Sunday. The decision to reintroduce the double-decker bus service was taken in the last board meeting of the corporation held on October 3 in presence of the chairman-cum-North Bengal Development Minister Gautam Deb. The managing director of the NBSTC,C Murugan,said the old double-decker bus has been renovated and painted. Earlier these buses used to ply on the Sonapur route. This time it will ply between Cooch Behar and Alipurduar or Cooch Behar and Mathabhanga. NBSTC sources said they will try to run the bus up to Jainti during the ensuing tourism season.

Panga bridge inaugurated

Jalpaiguri:The long-awaited Panga bridge in Jalpaiguri was inaugurated by North Bengal Development Minister Gautam Deb on Sunday. With the inauguration of the bridge,a large number of people from Sevagram to Bangladesh border in the district will be benefited. Four other small bridges at Bima,Barohati,Chekomari and Madhubani,all in Jalpaiguri district,were also inaugurated by Deb.
