Former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chhatterjee said, “Yechury will be truly a cementing factor in the party. People in general will find in him a vastly acceptable leader.’
Somnath Chatterjee, former Lok Sabha speaker expelled from the CPM when Prakash Karat was in charge, has welcome Sitaram Yechury’s elevation. “The new team will bring in a breath of fresh air,” said Chatterjee, who was expelled by the politburo after he refused to step down as Speaker when the CPM withdrew its support to UPA over the nuclear deal with the US.
“I am no more in the party but I continue to be a well-wisher of the communist party,” Somnath told The Indian Express. “I see new faces in the politburo as well as the central committee. It is an important day for the CPM which should now get a breath of fresh air. There should be an open-minded approach to dealing with the problems the party is facing.”

About Yechury, Somnath said, “Yechury was far more acceptable to all quarters than anyone else. He has the political acumen to deal with varied political outfits and personalities and has the political maturity to lead the party to greater heights. He will be truly a cementing factor in the party and bring in positivity. People in general will find in him a vastly acceptable leader.”
“Unfortunately, the CPM had landed in the political quicksand of decline. I congratulate Yechury along with the new team members such as young and enterprising Md Salim and experienced Hannan Mollah, who have the capability to bring in the much needed changes,” Somnath said. “There is new hope.”
Somnath had been a comrade for over 40 years when he was expelled, upsetting many leaders in West Bengal.
