‘Serious breach of security, contempt of House’: BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar alleges in letter to Lok Sabha Speaker after attack on convoy

A day after shoes, bricks and stones were hurled at him and his convoy in West Bengal, BJP state president and Union Minister of State for Education and DoNER Sukanta Majumdar on Thursday wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging a “serious breach of privilege and contempt of the House”.
In his letter, Majumdar accused the West Bengal police of failing to control the situation and protect him during his visit to Budge Budge in North 24 Parganas district on Thursday. He was in the area to meet party workers who were allegedly injured in political violence.
Majumdar’s convoy was reportedly gheraoed by a group of protestors, some of whom allegedly hurled stones, slippers, and abuses at him. The protestors were said to be demanding dues under the MGNREGA and PM Awas Yojana schemes.
Calling the attack a “conspiracy” by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), Majumdar wrote, “I submit this notice under Rule 222 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha regarding a grave breach of privilege and attack on the dignity, safety, and freedom of movement of a Member of Parliament and Union Minister.”
In the letter, a copy of which is with The Indian Express, the Balurghat MP stated: “On June 19, 2025, while I was visiting Diamond Harbour to meet victims of political violence and assess the law and order situation, my official convoy was gheraoed and violently attacked by a mob reportedly comprising workers of the Trinamool Congress. Stones were pelted at my convoy, vehicles were vandalised, and several persons accompanying me were injured. The attack posed a direct and serious threat to my life and the lives of those present.”
Majumdar, who is under Z-category security cover provided by the Centre, also blamed local law enforcement for inaction. “What is even more alarming is that during this heinous incident, the Superintendent of Police (Shri Rahul Goswami) was physically present at the location but failed to take any preventive or protective action, amounting to wilful negligence, dereliction of duty, and enabling of political violence. The SDPO of Diamond Harbour was not present at the site despite prior intimation of my visit,” he wrote.
He said the situation was brought under control only after intervention by CISF personnel assigned to him as part of his security. Majumdar claimed that the incident amounted to “contempt of the House.”
