A 45-year-old BJP worker died after being seriously injured during a clash between two groups in West Bengal’s Baruipur Sunday night, with his family alleging that he was targeted in a politically motivated attack.
The police, however, said the violence broke out over the formation of a puja committee in the North Tangebedia area and have not confirmed any political motive behind the death of Bapi Pramanik.
“An investigation has been initiated on the basis of the family’s complaint. Several people have been detained and are being questioned. The overall situation is being monitored. CCTV footage from the area is also being examined,” Atish Biswas, Additional Superintendent of Police, Baruipur, said.
The police said they have registered a complaint at Baruipur Police Station regarding the incident.

A phone call and an attack
According to the family’s complaint, Pramanik left home after receiving a phone call and was attacked soon after. He was taken to the hospital in a serious condition. The family said he had multiple stab wounds and his condition deteriorated during treatment. Doctors at the hospital later declared him dead.
The family has alleged that he was murdered in a planned manner as a result of old political enmity.

His family accused local Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sujan Mandal of being behind the attack with the alleged involvement of Trinamool Congress supporters. The police have not confirmed the allegations or established a political motive so far.
BJP state committee member and former district president Uttam Kar also alleged that TMC-backed supporters were behind the killing. “The party had already suspended the leader against whom allegations were being made several days ago,” Kar added.
The Trinamool Congress did not immediately respond.
“On Sunday night, a clash broke out between two groups in the North Tangebedia area of Hardah Gram Panchayat under Baruipur Police Station over the formation of a puja committee. During the fight, Pramanik was seriously injured. He was taken to the hospital, where he died. Several others were also injured in the incident,” a senior police officer said.
The police have stepped up surveillance in the area to prevent further clashes or unrest. They said the situation is currently under control.
