The BJP has sent a legal notice to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee for accusing the saffron party and the Assam government of hatching a conspiracy to kill five Bengali speaking people in Assam. BJP leader Mukul Roy on Monday said that they will be forced to file a defamation suit against Banerjee if he fails to offer his unconstitutional apology within seven days.
“Recently TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee while addressing his workers at a party programme directly accused the BJP and the Assam government of killing five people in Assam. Such statements will damage the reputation of BJP. We have sent him a legal notice for making such allegations. If he does not offer his unconstitutional apology within seven days, we will file a defamation suit against him,” Roy said during a news conference.
On November 1, five people were shot dead by suspected ULFA (1) gunmen in Assam’s Tinsukia district. On the next day, the TMC took to the streets to condemn the incident and held the BJP responsible for the attack.
Banerjee was not available for comments. His counsel Sanjay Basu told The Indian Express, “We are yet to get a copy of the legal notice. Once received, we will give the strongest possible reply to it.”
