The West Bengal BJP today filed a public interest litigation challenging the states decision to pay allowance of Rs 2,500 to imams for their social work.
The BJP claimed in its petition that the decision of the state government should be treated as unconstitutional and illegal. It said the government cannot pay such allowance on the ground that imams are involved in social work. Only the Wakf Board can pay allowance to imams and not the state government.
According to the Muslim religion, imams of mosques only perform religious work. This cannot be treated as social work, stated in the petition. The petition also pointed out that no government can pay allowance to any persons or community on religious grounds as India is a secular country. The case is likely come up for hearing on Friday next.
