“Bihar mein ho rahi hai jit hamari, ab hai Bangal ki bari (We are winning in Bihar, and now Bengal’s turn),” became the BJP’s slogan after the party’s success in the Bihar assembly elections. When the result trends turned in the NDA’s favour, Bengal BJP supporters handed out sweets at their state office. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari also distributed sweets in the legislative Assembly.

However, the celebrations provoked a sharp reaction from the state’s ruling TMC, which pushed back, saying that Bengal and Bihar are “not the same”. This comes ahead of the Bengal Assembly elections next year,

With the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leading in a clear majority of seats in Bihar, Union Minister Giriraj Singh declared that their “next target” is now West Bengal. “Bihar had decided that a government of anarchy would not be formed. The youth of Bihar are intelligent. This is the victory of development. We have won Bihar. Now it is Bengal’s turn,” he said, adding “In Bengal also, Didi (CM Mamata Banerjee) is running a government with Bangladeshis and goons. It will be defeated.”

The TMC responded on X: “The vitriol spewed by BJP against Bengal and its people is a disgusting display of contempt. Their loud-mouthed, knuckle-dragging Union Minister Giriraj Singh had the audacity to slander Bengal’s democratically elected government, chosen by the will of our Gonodebota, as a ‘Bangladeshi ki Sarkaar’ and ‘Rohingya ki Sarkaar.’ This is nothing short of a vile slur, painting every Bengali as a foreign intruder.”

The post went on: “This is Bangla-Birodhi BJP’s true face: a party that despises our identity and heritage. Amit Shah’s Delhi Police had the gall to label Bengali a ‘Bangladeshi language.’ Amit Malviya, in his staggering ignorance, declared ‘there is no language called Bengali.’ Himanta Biswa Sarma, with his toxic bigotry, threatened that anyone identifying ‘Bengali’ in census documents would be marked a foreigner.”

The TMC also said in the post, “Every insult you hurl, every lie you spread, is etched in our memory. Bengal will neither forget nor forgive. In 2026, the people of Bengal, whom you dare to demean, will rise like a tidal wave, crushing your arrogance, dismantling your divisive politics, and reducing your hateful ideology to ashes. Prepare to face the wrath of a united Bengal, for we will show no mercy to those who trample our pride.”

Bengal Industry Minister Shashi Panja said, “Giriraj Singh is Union minister and took oath to the Indian Constitution, but he crossed the limits of the Constitution. He insulted every Bengali.”

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said, “SIR was organised in Bihar and after that, the NDA got this result. In Bengal, SIR is going on, and after that, here also, BJP will win and TMC will go.” In a similar vein, former BJP state president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumder remarked, “People never allow jungle raaj. Because of jungle raaj, RJD was defeated. In Bengal, TMC will be defeated for their jungle raaj.”

The TMC, however, rejected the BJP’s reasoning. Spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, “The political equation of Bihar and Bengal is not the same. If BJP thinks what happened in Bihar will repeat in Bengal, they are living in a fool’s paradise.”

As the Election Commission of India (ECI) continues to release trends, the NDA is seen to be comfortably placed well beyond the half-way mark in Bihar — which is 121 in a 243-seat Assembly.
