Bengal school jobs scam highlights: After a search operation on Wednesday, ED recovered a huge sum of money from the flat of Arpita Mukherjee, a close aide of West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee, located at Belgharia Town Club news agency ANI reported. Rs 20 Crores has been counted so far. Further recovery of money is expected.

Arrested West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee and his close aide Arpita Mukherjee were brought to the ESI hospital in Kolkata Wednesday for their medical examination, ANI reported.

TMC MLA Manik Bhattacharya reached the Enforcement Directorate office in the city Wednesday morning, ahead of the time he was asked to present himself to face questioning about his alleged involvement in the teacher recruitment scam. Bhattacharya, who is a lawmaker from Palashipara in Nadia district and a former president of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, was asked to be present at the ED office in CGO complex in Salt Lake at 12 noon but he reached there at 10 am, PTI reported.

West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee, who is currently in the custody of the Enforcement Director (ED) in connection with the recruitment of teachers and staff in government-aided schools, can find himself in more trouble with the central agency claiming to find his involvement in alleged irregularities in appointment of teachers through Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) in 2014. The Calcutta High Court had ordered a CBI probe into the 2014 Primary Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) and dismissed 269 people who were recruited through the test. Chatterjee was then the state education minister. The seizure list of recoveries from Chatterjee’s house in Naktala indicates his involvement in the TET corruption too, said an ED official Meanwhile, Chatterjee’s official car, used by him for over 15 years, was deposited in the state Assembly. Chatterjee, also secretary general of the ruling Trinamool Congress, was allotted the car and a driver by the Assembly as the Leader of the Opposition in 2006.

Editorial | Fire Mr Partha Chatterjee: Trinamool Congress must confront growing corruption within

The arrest of Partha Chatterjee, Commerce, Industry and IT Minister in West Bengal, in connection with an alleged money laundering case leaves the Trinamool Congress (TMC) with a lot of questions to answer. Chatterjee is not just any minister, he is the number two in the Mamata Banerjee cabinet and secretary general of the party. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) took Chatterjee into custody a day after it raided the premises of his aide Arpita Mukherjee and claimed to have seized Rs 21.20 crore in cash besides foreign currency, ornaments and property papers from her apartment. The party has refused to take action against Chatterjee until the charges against him are proven. Considering that cash was allegedly seized from Chatterjee’s aide and the evidence the agencies have flagged regarding his links to the irregular recruitment of school teachers, the TMC’s defence is unconvincing — and self-defeating. Explained: What is teacher recruitment scam in West Bengal & why HC ordered CBI probe

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged irregularities in the recruitment of teachers in state-run schools through State Level Selection Test (SLST).

This comes months after allegations of corruption in the recruitment of Group C and Group D employees in secondary and higher secondary schools under the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE).

What are the alleged scams?

The notification for appointment of teachers in state-run schools in West Bengal through SLST was published in 2014 and the recruitment process started in 2016. However, a series of petitions were filed in the Calcutta High Court alleging anomalies in the recruitment process. The petitioners alleged that many examinees who got less marks ranked high in the merit list. There were also allegations that some applicants, who weren’t even in the merit list, received appointment letters.
