Bengal police questions Assam Congress leader

OFFICIALS of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate on Wednesday questioned former union minister and senior Congress leader of Assam,Matang Singh,in connection with the debacle of Saradha Group.

OFFICIALS of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate on Wednesday questioned former union minister and senior Congress leader of Assam,Matang Singh,in connection with the debacle of Saradha Group. Singh was among those whose names were mentioned by Saradha Group CMD Sudipta Sen in his letter to the Central Bureau of Investigation. In the letter,Sen had alleged that Singh had “damaged” his business in a “serious manner.”

Singh was questioned for almost two hours by a team of senior police officials,including Commissioner of Bidhanagar Police Rajeev Kumar,ADC of Detective Department Arnab Ghosh. According to police sources,Singh is said to have told the police that he has not accepted any bribe from Sen,though it was offered to him several times. It has been learnt that Singh was called for questioning by the investigators a week ago.

“I am here to help the police in its investigation. I want Sudipta Sen to be punished as he has duped so many people in West Bengal,” Singh told mediapersons after the questioning.

Singh held a position in the cabinet of Prime Minister P V Narshima Rao. However,he was suspended from the Congress a decade ago. He was re-inducted into the party a couple of years ago.

Sen in his letter mentioned wrote: “Matang Singh has taken Rs 28 crore from us in his various accounts,Finally,he has given 50 per cent shares of NE Bangla (a media channel) but recently,through Rajesh Bajaj,a businessman of Guwahati,one CEO of NE Assam has negotiated with Matang Singh and cancelled the agreement of the shareholdings and issued cheque of Rs 28 crore. All are post-dated cheques spanning for a period of 2 years.”

The letter had named several other Bengal Trinamool leaders,including two Rajya Sabha members — Kunal Ghosh and Srinjay Bose.

Sudipta,Debjani now in Kolkata Police custody

SARaDHA GROUP CMD Sudipta Sen and a director of the company,Debjani Mukherjee,were sent to custody of Kolkata Police till June 11. The city police had sought their custody in connection with the complaint made by an investor,Mina Bhunia,who had alleged that the Saradha company has duped her of Rs 4.5 lakh,which she had invested with the collective investment scheme of the company.

According to police sources,there are at least six complaints lodged at several police stations under Kolkata Police in which the duo will be tagged. Since their arrest from Sonmarg in Jammu and Kashmir on April 23,both the accused have remained in the custody of Bidhannagar City Police for 23 days and South 24-Parganas district police for ten days.

Orissa Police also wants duo’s custody

Orissa Police has approached a court in Bidhannagar seeking the custody of Sudipta Sen (above) and Debjani Mukherjee. In the plea,the police from the neighbouring state said they had sealed the offices of Saradha Group at Balasore in the state in the first week of May in the wake of the company going bust.
