Bengal plans law to fine public property vandals

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said her government would enact a law to slap fines on those who damage public property.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said her government would enact a law to slap fines on those who damage public property. The Chief Minister announced this at Writers’ Buildings while briefing the press on the bandh called by the NDA,which was partially successful in West Bengal.

“Who will pay for the damage to public property, buses, tram cars? Why should people be beaten up? Will the political parties calling the bandhs pay for them? I have decided that those who perpetrate this kind of wanton destruction of property will have to pay compensation for it. The government is consulting legal experts on how a legislation can be made in this regard,’’ Mamata said.

She alleged that BJP supporters aided by CPM workers wreaked mayhem during the bandh today. “BJP and CPM supporters hobnobbed with each other in trying to paralyse life in the state. But their designs have failed. I congratulate the people for foiling their plans. I urge the people to be united against such mischief mongers,’’ the chief minister said.

She also said that she herself was in favour of rollback in petrol prices. “We were the first party to demand complete rollback. But we cannot resort to road and railway blockades for effecting this. Burning of buses cannot be the solution.’’

Mamata also used the opportunity to criticise the CPM,which took potshots at her for arranging for a gala reception in Kolkata for the KKR team which won the IPL trophy. “Other states do so many things for the winning teams. We have treated them with rice and daal. Why do you take exception to that” They are trigger-happy people. One of their leaders in Kerala confessed to committing murders. Still they see themselves on a moral high ground,” Mamata said.
