The presence of West Bengal tourism minister Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury at Mata Amritanandamayi Devi ashram in Kollam with Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi Thursday has triggered considerable interest in political circles.

Choudhury was in Kollam Thursday to participate in the 60th birthday celebrations of Amma, but Congress and CPM leaders declined the invitation after they heard Modi will be attending the event.

The minister, however, played down the incident saying he went there with prior permission of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“Amma is loved and respected by crores. I did not exchange words with Modi,” Choudhury told The Indian Express. Mukul Roy came out in support of Choudhury, saying he went there in his individual capacity.

However, the minister’s visit to Kerala has given CPM enough ammunition. “It is not as innocuous as it looks. He is an expert in handling both the Congress and the BJP. Malda municipality was witness to that. BJP these days is going soft on the TMC. So you don’t know,” CPM Politburo member, Suryakanta Mishra, said.
