Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday paid a surprise visit to the office of Singur Block Development Officer (BDO) in Hooghly district while returning to Kolkata after attending the convocation at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan.
The employees at the BDO officer were surprised to see the Governor who went straight to the chamber of BDO Partha Bandyopadhyay, but could neither meet him nor the Joint BDO as both were on leave.
Disappointed, Dhankhar said: “I could have been perhaps a little more informed about Singur. I will have a planned visit next time and try to know more about it.”
The ruling TMC criticised Dhankhar for the visit. “It is not becoming of a Governor to make visits to block offices. I think he is having difficulties understanding his roles and duties,” said senior TMC leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay.
Ten years ago, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee had led an agitation against land acquisition at Singur that catapulted her to power in 2011.
