THE BODY of a BJP booth vice-president was found hanging in a mango orchard in Nadia district on Tuesday. His family members, however, alleged murder and pointed out that his right leg was broken. The incident took place under Krishnaganj police station area in Nadia, officers said. They identified the deceased as Nakul Haldar (50).

“The body has been sent for post-mortem and the report is awaited,” said a senior officer of Krishnanagar police commiserate.

According to family members, Nakul stepped out of his residence around 5 pm to water his farm in Krishnaganj. Around 7:30 pm, local residents alerted family members that Nakul’s body was found. Doctors at Shaktinagar district hospital declared him dead on arrival. Nakul was a resident of Pipulberia village under Hanskhali police station area.

“When we found my father’s body, his right leg was broken and his body had injury marks. How can a person whose leg is broken hang himself? He was a known local BJP leader and was murdered by the ruling party’s supporters. I have registered a complaint with Krishnaganj police station,” Nakul’s son Rajesh told mediapersons.

Several BJP leaders, including Ranaghat MP Jagannath Sarkar and Ranaghat Dakshin MLA Mukutmoni Adhikari visited the area and met Nakul’s family members.

“Nakul Haldar was likely murdered after a political conspiracy. We demand that the culprits be arrested immediately and given stringent punishment,” said Jagannath Sarkar.

“How can a person whose leg is broken die by suicide? I have spoken with his family members,” said Mukutmoni Adhikari.

TMC Anchal president, Jayanta Biswas said, “The police are probing the incident. It looks like a case of suicide but if it is murder, the police will take action. The BJP is dragging our party’s name to get undue mileage in the area and create an atmosphere of fear. None of our party members are involved in this [incident].”
