Kolkata reported a wave of violence as residents protesting against excessive noise pollution, among other issues, were subjected to “brutal attacks” during Kali Puja festivities.

Sayan Kundu, a resident of Ananda Palit Road in Entally, was allegedly assaulted on Sunday after he complained about the loud noise of firecrackers, which was disturbing his ailing mother Khukumani Kundu, who is a heart patient, and his wife who has breathing issues. Around 20-25 people allegedly attacked him and hit him with a brick.

“I repeatedly called the police helpline number and the Golf Green police station, but there was no response,” Kundu claimed. Despite the ordeal, he alleged the Entally police initially hesitated to file an FIR, “forcing him” to lodge a General Diary (GD) complaint on Sunday. So far, two people have been arrested in the case.

In another disturbing incident on Sunday, Sanjay Bhattacharya, a resident of Azadgarh, was allegedly attacked by his neighbors for protesting against the noise pollution caused by a loud sound system. His uncle, who is bedridden and on oxygen support, and his young cousin, a cancer patient, were affected by the noise, he said. While he lodged a complaint with the Golf Green police station and the South Suburban Division DC, the accused Sanjay Saha and others remain absconding.

In Laketown, a police officer was assaulted on Sunday night by a group of miscreants who were reportedly angered by his attempts to curb the use of firecrackers during Kali Puja worship. The officer sustained injuries to his face, and three individuals have been arrested for physical assault and obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty.

Late on Sunday night, the immersion process of a Kali idol was underway at Devighat in Dakshindari, when two groups indulged in a scuffle over the bursting of crackers.

In Haltu, a couple was attacked by a group of individuals allegedly associated with local Trinamool Congress councilor Lipika Manna. The couple was purportedly protesting against the vandalism of a puja pandal on Saturday night when the attack took place. While a complaint was filed, no police action has been taken yet, officials said.
