Heralding his return to the mainstream TMC, MP Mukul Roy Wednesday found his way into the delegation that met Union Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptulla in Delhi.

After party supremo Mamata Banerjee breaks bread with him on December 9 at her nephew Abhishek Banerjee’s residence, the message about Roy’s return from political exile was sent across the rank and file of the TMC.

A little ahead of the dinner, Roy met Mamata when he visited the Central Hall of Parliament where the latter was meeting her Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal.

Commenting on the development, TMC MP from Tamluk Sishir Adhikary said, “Mukul has always been and will always remain a TMC MP.”

Besides being the Rajya Sabha MP, Roy was the founder member of the party, the TMC national general secretary and the Leader for the party in Rajya Sabha. He was popularly known as the party’s “second-in-command” until the summon from the CBI in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam led to Mamata turning her back on him as information trickled in that Roy had named several MPs of the party allegedly to save his own skin.

Sources now say that it was Mamata’s instruction to include Roy’s name in the delegation visiting the Union minister in Delhi Wednesday. The MPs met at Derek O’Brien’s residence in the morning where MP Sudip Bandopadhyay embraced Roy as if welcoming him back to the party.

“There might have been a communication gap but neither the party nor Roy ever disowned each other,” Bandopadhyay said.
