At least 10 lakh new voters – aged between 18 to 25 years – have enrolled their names in the electoral roll, which was revised and officially published today by the Chief Electoral Officer,West Bengal. The 2011 Assembly polls will be held on the basis of this voters list.
Significantly, for the first time the Elector-People ratio (EP ratio) in Bengal has touched the national average. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO),West Bengal,Sunil Gupta said the Election Commission (EC) has introduced a new software to delete names of all duplicate voters, and was successful in removing about three lakh such voters. After deletion and inclusion there was a rise of 11.23 lakh voters in the list as compared to the 2010 September list, said Gupta. “About 10 lakh young voters have enrolled their names in the list,” said Gupta while releasing the revised list.
The ruling CPM has been saying that the difference between the Left Front and the Opposition votes were around 11 lakh in the Lok Sabha elections in May 2009. The party thinks that if they are able to wrest the trust of 11 lakh voters, they can win the polls. But political thinkers feel that the addition of 10 lakh new voters may go against the party due to the anti-incumbancy factor.
“It has been evident from the past elections that the youth generally votes against the rulers. We apprehend that this time too a large number of youths will vote for the Opposition,” said a senior CPM leader.
He,however, added: “Recent trends in students union elections have shown that a sizable section of the young voters has opted for the Left front. According to our analysis, the youth actually want economic changes, not only political changes. So we have planned to campaign for industrialisation and development in the run up to the forthcoming Assembly elections.”
Meanwhile, the CEO said that 95.4 per cent voters have already been issued Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC). Aiming at ‘No EPIC,No vote’,the EC has planned to organise camps at the booth level from January 11. He said that for the last two months, during the revision of voters’ list,a survey was conducted on the voters above the age of 80 years. Moreover, the Commission has checked the death registrar at the block level,to bring out a fair voters list,CEO added.
