Arup murder: Trinamool promises govt job to brother

While the state Congress has called a Howrah bandh on Wednesday to protest against Arup’s murder, the BJP will take out a procession from the Panchanantala party office to the DM’s Bungalow at 3 pm.

Amar, while appreciating the gestures, said he was not sure whether he would be able to participate in any of the protests.

When contacted, Roy said Arup’s aunt had met him on Monday with a job request. “She told me that the family was very needy and the sole bread earner was dead now. I had assured that I would do whatever I could,” he added.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was supposed to visit Arup’s residence in the evening, could not do so due to a puja that had been organised there.

Sources said Mamata had spoken to Arup’s parents over phone and assured the family of a proper probe into the incident. She is likely to visit the family in a day or two.

Meanwhile, while the State Human Rights Commission has sought a report on the murder from the Howrah police by February 22, Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee has asked the party’s Howrah district unit to submit a report to him.

Criticised for making no arrests in the case so far, Howrah Police Commissioner Ajey Ranade said: “None of the accused are known criminals. We are trying to nab them. We work equally hard on all cases. Sometimes luck favours, sometimes it doesn’t.”
