A day after a first year medical student was arrested for the death of mentally challenged Korban Shah inside the boys’ hostel of Kolkata-based Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital, the public prosecutor on Wednesday sought a 14-day police custody for the student.
Twenty-year-old Jasimuddin, a first-year MBBS student at the institute, was on Wednesday presented at the court of Arpita Ghosh, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM), Sealdah.
Police sources said Jasimuddin, one of the occupants of the hostel’s room No. 99, had a definite connection with the murder and his statement in the case was not convincing. “He had been interrogated earlier. He still maintains that he woke up hearing a ruckus outside his room. On reaching the spot, he saw that Korban Shah was being beaten up by seniors he couldn’t identify. He spotted his cellphone, which had gone missing, lying there. He picked it up and returned to his room,” said an officer of the homicide department.
Jasimuddin has been arrested for non-cooperation, inconsistency in statement, presence at the place of occurrence and for alleged acts of omission: neither did he stop the seniors from beating up Korban, nor did he inform college authorities or the police about the incident.
So far, police have recorded statements of over 150 persons, including students and hostel staff. Most of them have confirmed that Jasimuddin was present when the lynching took place. The first-year student shared his room with an intern and two senior students, but police said on the day of the incident, Jasimuddin was alone in the room.
Stating that police wanted to question Jasimuddin further, the public prosecutor on Wednesday sought a 14-day police custody for the student. On his part, the defence lawyer said there was no credible information about Jasimuddin being present at the place of occurrence and hence he should be granted bail. The magistrate, however, ordered his police custody till December 24.
Police sources said more arrests would soon follow.
Hailing from Galimpur in Bengal’s Malda district, Jasimuddin had cracked the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination in 2013, securing the 267th rank in the general category and 28th rank in the OBC category.
“He could have been involved in the case. But, it was not physically possible for him alone to carry out the act. Others are surely involved whose names would come out during interrogation,” said a student on condition of anonymity. He added that Jasimuddin was a bright student.
