Kolkata:The transport department is likely to propose a raise in the night charges of taxis by 15 per cent in a meeting to be held Tuesday. “The hike would be for commuters availing of taxis between 10.30 pm and 4.30 am,” said a source close to the transport minister.

Taxi unions, however, are far from being satisfied. Bimal Guha, general secretary,Bengal Taxi Association, said,“I have heard about it. It is like asking for a shirt and getting a vest. We had asked for a general hike and the night charges to be increased in proportion to that. Less than 20 per cent of the taxis ply at that time. If the government thinks that this decision will make us go back on our plan to call the 72-hour strike, then it is in for some a surprise,” he said.
