Six hours after the Howrah-bound Dehradun Express derailed today,the railway authorities in Howrah could not furnish a list of the dead or injured.
Relatives of the victims of the 13009 Up Doon Express,which derailed between Mahirawan and Khetisarai stations in Uttar Pradesh,waited at the Howrah inquiry office,but till 6pm the railway officials could not provide them with detailed information.
According to railway officials,six coaches (S5,S6,S7,S8,S9,SE1) derailed and rescue operations are on. Three additional coaches will be attached to the 13009 Up Doon Express leaving Howrah at 8.35 pm today so that relatives of the victims can reach the site.
Dinesh Mukherjee,who came to Howrah Station to inquire about his family,got no information. His father,mother and brother were in the S9 coach yesterday. He has not been able to contact them since the accident.
I repeatedly asked the station manager,the person sitting at the inquiry desk,but they could not give me detailed information, he added. I dont know whether my family is alive or not.
The chief public relations officer of Eastern Railways said they were collecting information and the list would reach the relatives soon.
Md Javed was able to contact his relatives on the train. My nephew and his two daughters were in S2. Around 3.30 pm,my nephew called me up and said he was injured in the leg,while his daughters received minor injuries and were admitted in hospital in Lucknow, he said. There was utter mismanagement at the accident site,he added.
Railway Minister Mukul Roy said railway officials were taking necessary steps so that rescue operations are conducted smoothly.
