A number of antique artworks, worth lakhs, were looted from the historic Laha household at 235/1,Bidhan Sarani in north Kolkata on Tuesday morning.

The palatial house belonging to one of the richest and oldest families of Kolkata was built in 1886 by zamindar Prankrishna Laha. His descendants still live in the house. In the wee hours, security guards of the house — Sunil Kumar Chatterjee and Jagadish Prasad Gupta — came to know about the burglary after they heard some noises from the first floor of the building.

The rooms have a height of 18 to 20 feet. A senior police officer said, the burglars sneaked into the room after carving out a square hole in the roof.

“The roof was made of tiles and cemented with a mixture of lime and brick powder. The burglars cleverly dismantled the tiles and carved the hole to enter the room. The burglars used rope to climb on the rooftop. We have recovered an iron-rod from the spot,” said Damayanti Sen,DC,Detective Department.

The theft took place despite the presence of six trained dogs, including German Shepherd and Doberman,in the Laha household. A complaint has been lodged with the Jorasanko police station by Lakshmi Laha (70),the owner of the house. A senior official of the police station said that around 15 oil paintings of seventeenth century were removed from the frames and found rolled on the floor.
