Aftab Ansari, who is sentenced to death in the terrorist attack on the American Center in Kolkata and is lodged in Alipore central jail since February 2002,has written to the jail authorities to shift him on humanitarian grounds.
He has written to us that he is from Varanasi and he wants to be shifted there since his relatives would be able to see him more often. He also said he would be more comfortable there. He is facing two-three cases in UP too and there is no legal hassle in sending him there. I have sent his request to IG Prisons of that state and it is for them to take a call, Ranvir Kumar,IG,Prisons,West Bengal, told The Indian Express.
There are reports that Ansari is afraid that if is he is hanged, none of his relatives would be nearby.
According to sources in the jail department, the state government is not keen on keeping the high-profile inmate because of security reasons. He is a big security hazard. A 24-hour watch has to be kept on him. We will be happy if he is shifted, a jail official said.
Ansari, along with his associate Jamaluddin Nasir, was sentenced to death for the January 2002 attack on American Center in which five policemen were killed.
Both Ansari and Nasir were put up at Alipore jail but for security reasons,Nasir was sent to Presidency Jail about a year ago.
A couple of months back Ansari requested for political prisoner status which was rejected.
We give him as many facilities as possible as sanctioned by the jail code. He wanted instruments for physical exercise and we provided that, a jail official said.
