The junior doctors at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital withdrew their strike on Saturday evening at 8 pm after assurance from senior Trinamool Congress leader and Union Shipping Minister Mukul Roy that a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be arranged to discuss their demands.
Earlier, the state government had issued warnings to the striking doctors about stringent action against them if they fail to call off their stir. Among a host of demands, the junior doctors had demanded more security in the wake of alleged assault by a patients family.
Hospital authorities claimed that the services in the hospital will return to normalcy soon.
The strike, which began on Friday, crippled the crucial services in the hospital and forced the patients to shift to another hospital.
Emergency services remained on Saturday too and several specialists were roped in from various state-run hospitals to tide over the crisis.
Dr Nirmal Majhi,co -chairman of West Bengal Standing Committee Health, said that all essential equipment for emergency situation have been supplied. We would develop the necessary infrastructure but the junior doctors have to withdraw their strike first, he had said earlier in the day.
