Adhir’s bail extended,to campaign for civic polls

The minister faces charges in connection with the murder of a Trinamool leader,Kamal Sheikh,in 2011.

In a temporary respite to union minister of state for railways Adhir Chowdhury,a Murshidabad court Saturday extended the period of bail for Chowdhury till November 28 .

The minister faces charges in connection with the murder of a Trinamool leader,Kamal Sheikh,in 2011. His name did not figure in the murder complaint initially, but was mentioned in the charge-sheet later as the main conspirator, following which a district court issued an arrest warrant against him.

Significantly, the municipal election in Barhampur in Murshidabad district is scheduled to be held on November 22. The extension of the bail period ensures that Chowdhury is able to campaign for the municipal election.

Chowdhury had on October 30 got an interim bail till Saturday.

On the day,the court had adjourned the proceedings after the Bar Association said lawyers would not appear for any case as the number of cases listed for the day were more than 300.

On Saturday,Chowdhury was present in the court to hear the proceedings.

He had earlier termed the case as an instance of “government’s malafide intention”.

PCC general secretary Amitabha Chakraborty said,“This is a clear case of political framing. Since the TMC failed to make a dent in the support base of Congress in Murshidabad, they conspired against Chowdhury and included his name in the the chargesheet. They wanted to book him before the election so as to make the Congress weak in the district. But they have failed to do so.”
