Six policemen and three others were critically injured when fire crackers seized by the police went off accidentally inside one of their vehicles in Habra police station in North 24 Parganas Monday afternoon.
The police vehicle had just returned from a raid, confiscating crackers that were beyond the prescribed sound decibel limits.
Suddenly, one of the crackers went off, triggering a series of blasts in which the entire seized items exploded. The policemen, who were sitting inside the vehicle and standing close by, suffered severe burn injuries. Three other persons who had come to the station and were passing by the police vehicle were also injured in the blast.
The explosion’s impact was such that window panes of Habra police station were shattered. The scene was followed by panic as locals ran helter-skelter.
A senior police official said it was an accidental explosion but forensic experts have been called in to ascertain how the fire crackers went off. Minister for Food and Supplies
Jyotipriya Mallick visited the police station and said it was an accident and there was no sabotage involved.
The minister added that an investigation is on to find out how the fire crackers went off.
