Holi celebrations turned bloody in North-24 Parganas district on Friday as a 40-year-old driver was hacked to death after he protested against miscreants who were creating a ruckus in an inebriated condition.

This comes eight months after Sourav Chouhdury, a 21-year-old college student, was hacked to death for protesting against the liquor mafia at Bamangachi in the district. Thursday’s incident took place at Duttapukur area — 10 km from Bamangachi.

Eyewitnesses said the driver, Sankar Das, requested the miscreants — allegedly known to him — not to create a ruckus and leave the area. The accused, all in an inebriated condition, refused. Das returned home but later in the evening, again went to the spot. He again asked the accused to leave and threatened to lodge a complaint with the local police station.

This led to an altercation and the miscreants started beating up Das. The locals came to his rescue and Das was rushed to a hospital in Barasat from where he was shifted to R G Kar Hospital in Kolkata late Thursday.

Early Friday, he succumbed to his injuries. His family went on to lodge a complaint against two men and a woman with the police. Later, two of the accused — Ganesh Das and Ujjwala Das — were arrested. The third suspect, Jayanta Das, is still absconding.

“Ganesh and Sankar were friends. Yesterday, they got involved in a brawl. The altercation soon took the shape of a violent clash… At wee hours today, Sankar succumbed,” said a police officer.
