A 22-year-old man was hacked to death at Entally area in eastern Kolkata — allegedly for opposing loud music and dance in a marriage. A local Trinmaool Congress leader, who has earlier been arrested in charges of extortion, is named the key accused in the case.
Witnesses said the victim, Chandan Ghosh, who resides in a slum at Entally, protested against loud music being played and “obscene” dance by a woman in the area.
The woman’s husband, Ashish Halder, the prime accused in the case, and his associates dragged Chandan from his area and chopped his hand. He was rushed to a hospital by the locals where he succumbed to his injuries.
“My brother was bleeding profusely and he died of acute blood loss,” said his elder brother Amit Ghosh.
Amit Ghosh has lodged murder complaints against Ashish Halder and five others.” Ashish alias Toton is a known goon in area and reportedly enjoys the support of the ruling party, too.
“My brother used to protest against Toton always. We have lodged complaints with the police several times against him. Yesterday, Toton’s wife was drunk and dancing. My brother only told him to take her inside and stop the ruckus. But Toton and his associates started beating my brother’s friend and then chased him. They them chopped my his hands,” broke down Amit.
Dipali Das, TMC councillor of ward 56, however said, “ I do not know him (Ashish). I am not aware of the incident too. I was very busy with our party’s programme on International Women’s Say. And now I am feeling very tired.” While contacted, Dhrubajyoti Dey , DC, ESD said, “Ashish is a known tough. But there was no pending case against him. He is absconding. But we are looking into the case.”
Chandan’s wife is under severe trauma. “His wife is eight month pregnant. They got married last year,” said Amit.
