2014: Jamaat booster shot for Didi

Muslim organisation Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) Tuesday hailed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for promoting the cause of minorities

In an indication of its leanings ahead of the Lok Sabha elections,Muslim organisation Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) Tuesday hailed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for promoting the cause of minorities even as the Calcutta High Court cancelled the monthly stipend for muezzins and imams announced by her last year.

“The Left ruled (West Bengal) for 30 years but did not leave a good impression (on the minorities). The TMC government is at least doing something for the Muslims. Mamata has ensured that more Muslims get government jobs. Despite the court orders against honorariums to imams and muezzins, she said she would ensure the allowance,” said Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari, president,JIH.

Umari was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

Asked if Mamata was trying to appease the minorities with doles,Umari said: “She is doing what she had said she would and if it is appeasement where people are being benefited, then what is wrong in it?”

Umari also said the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh, which is facing flak from all quarters over the Muzaffarnagar riots, has failed to live to the expectations of the Muslims “Muslims comprise 20 to 30 per cent of the population (in UP) and the Akhilesh government came to power by making many promises to Muslims. They have not fulfilled any promise,” he said.

He,however, said UP CM’s resignation in view of the continuing violence was not a solution.

“Akhilesh stepping down would mean President’s rule. And after six months,Mayawati would be back in power, which is not a desirable solution. Instead, this government should realise its responsibilities and fulfil its promises,” Umari said.

He also said there was a trend of naming the Indian Mujahideen (IM) for any terror activity in the country. “I asked many top officials where is the IM headquartered? Is it in Mumbai,Bangalore or Chennai? No one had any answer. The administration should come clean on the IM,its existence, where it operates from, and who all are behind it,” Umari said.

On the arrested alleged IM terrorist Yasin Bhatkal,he said,“Many theories are floating but no one seems to know which organisation he belonged to,” Umari said.
