Two CPM workers were shot and hacked to death in a clash with a group of Congress workers at Ekdalia village in Rejinagar in Murshidabad late last night.

A CPM candidate for the panchayat polls,Mrityunjai Ghosh,along with his workers and supporters,was returning home when a group of Congress workers clashed with them around 11.30 pm yesterday. While two workers of the CPM were killed,Ghosh,who also suffered bullet injuries,has been admitted to a local hospital and is said to be critical.

The deceased have been identified as Debsaran Ghosh (45 ) and Amar Ghosh (28) of Ekdalia village.

Ghosh has been fielded from the Nazipur gram panchayat seat.

According to a senior police official,the CPM group was returning after campaigning when Congress workers started hurling bombs at them and also opened fire at them.

After shooting two of them dead,the miscreants chopped their bodies to pieces,said a senior police official. The “mutilated” bodies were recovered by the police early this morning.

Humayun Kabir,SP,Murshidabad said,“Two villagers were killed after two groups clashed. A panchayat candidate and his associates are injured and admitted in hospital. We have received a complaint against 12 persons,who are residents of the same village. We have conducted raids and arrested one person,Jayanta Ghosh. The remaining persons named in the FIR are absconding with their families.”

Significantly,with two more deaths in the districts,the toll in pre-poll clashes has now touched 11. A police report,submitted to the state home department,revealed that nine people have been killed in poll clashes in the districts till now since the filing of nomination started.

The incident in Rejinagar is the second such instance in which a candidate has been attacked. Last week,a BJP candidate was killed in Malda.
