At least 18 persons were injured in a clash between Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) and Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) supporters at Mirik today, just nine days before Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to visit the Darjeeling hills.

Trouble broke out when GNLF members were about to hold a a meeting at Sourini in Mirik, the home of GNLF leader Subhash Ghishing. GJM members allegedly tried to disrupt the meeting, resulting in the clash. One GNLF member was arrested.

The injured were admitted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital and later released after preliminary treatment.

Both parties blamed each other for the clash. While GNLF members claimed that GJM members tried to disrupt their programme,GJM supporters claimed that GNLF members first clashed with them, which resulted in the police lathicharge.

To protest against the clash, the GJM has called a bandh in the hills from 6 pm tomorrow. They have demanded the transfer of Mirik OC Sourabh Sen for his “indiscriminate lathicharge” and arrest of the GNLF workers responsible for the clash.

Roshan Giri,GJM general secretary, said,“We have asked the chief minister and North Bengal Development Minister Gautam Deb to arrest the miscreants immediately. We are giving them time. If they fail to arrest them and shift the OC of Mirik, then we will continue our strike in the hills for an indefinite period.”

Senior officials of the administration said that as the situation escalated, the police lathicharged to dispel the mob. But it was the GJM supporters who first attacked GNLF supporters when they started their meeting after opening their office at Sourini in Mirik.

Mamata will visit Darjeeling on May 14 to strengthen ties with the GJM at a time when the GNLF is gaining ground in some parts of the hills.

A tripartite meeting is likely on May 14 between the Centre, state and GJM for smooth functioning of the GTA. The three-tier panchayat which is yet to gain constitutional status will be discussed at the meeting,at which home secretary Basudeb Banerjee will also be present.
