Kolkata Police has seized around 6,000 kg of illegal firecrackers from September 1 till date. This includes over 3,000 kg of crackers seized in the last seven days as part of a special drive ahead of Kali Puja. Sources in the police said that 18 people have been arrested in this connection.
Meanwhile, senior police officers said that around 2,500 additional forces would be deployed in Kolkata to ensure safety of people during Kali Puja. “A total of 3,584 pujas have been organised across the city. Special forces will be deployed in and around 25 big Kali Puja pandals,” said a police officer.
To tackle any exigency, 21 quick response teams (QRT) will be deployed, sources said. This apart, 27 watch towers have been erected to keep tab on crowd. Also, 23 High Radio Flying Squads and 41 divisional and additional special mobile vans will be placed near pandals, they added.
Police personnel will keep vigil on movement of people across the city through CCTV cameras. Sixteen additional CCTV cameras have already been installed, said sources. Police have also imposed a ban on using DJs during immersion processions. They will also ensure noise levels do not rise above 90 db due to firecrackers.
