Two days after a 14-year-old girl was sent to an observation home after she strangled her landlord’s son, police on Friday said a fight between the two over what to watch on television had led to the crime.
The body of five-year-old boy Arpan Jana was recovered from a house in Shantipur village’s Mecheda Bazaar in East Midnapore late Wednesday.
Arpan Jana’s parents Jagannath and Geeta, who run a grocery business, had rented out one of their houses to a couple and their 14-year-old daughter four months ago. Arpan was very fond of her, said sources.
On Wednesday evening, Arpan had gone to the tenants’ flat to play with the girl. When he didn’t return home till late, his father and neighbours started looking for him.
They eventually found him under the girl’s bed. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.
“The girl has said she was watching a serial. But Arpan wanted to watch cartoon and forcibly took the remote and changed the channel. Angry at this, the girl killed the child,” said a senior police officer.
The incident took place when the girl’s parents were not at home.
East Midnapore SP Alok Rajoria said: “It seems she strangled the child out of anger with no intention of murdering him.” The girl has since been produced before the Juvenile Justice Board of Tamluk and sent to an observation home.
When contacted, Arpan’s mother Geeta said: “My son was so close to her. I should not have left my child with her.”
