The victim, Geeta Devi Sharma, was out in the fields shepherding her cattle on Tuesday when the attack is suspected to have occurred.

With the Opposition BJP slamming the Congress government over the law and order situation in the state, Rajasthan Police Wednesday formed a team of 400 personnel to find out who killed a middle-aged woman and chopped off her feet to steal her silver jewellery at Khatepura village in Jaipur Rural’s Jamwa Ramgarh sub-division.

“We have deployed 30 teams with around 400 policemen. This includes four Additional SPs, eight Deputy SPs, 15 Circle Inspectors and two companies of Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC),” SP Rural Shankar Dutt Sharma said.

“They are searching the entire area for weapons or any clue whatsoever. We have also deployed the dog squad, the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, the cyber team, etc…We have been camping there since yesterday,” the SP said.

Sharma also said that apart from Rs 8 lakh in compensation, a dairy booth has been announced for the family of the victim.

The victim, Geeta Devi Sharma, was out in the fields shepherding her cattle on Tuesday afternoon when the attack is suspected to have occurred. Her body was later found in the fields by a villager, police said. Her neck and ears also had injury marks, they said. An FIR was lodged against unknown persons under IPC section 302 (murder).

Following the discovery of the body, Sharma’s relatives and locals demanded compensation, refused to conduct the last rites and sat on a dharna, which was eventually called off on Wednesday afternoon.

“There is a Victim Compensation Scheme, under which her kin will be given Rs 5 lakh and an additional Rs 3 lakh through CM Relief Fund,” said Jaipur District Collector Antar Singh Nehra, who reached the spot on Wednesday to mediate with the family.

“Several persons have already been detained in connection with the case and the police are still conducting investigations,” the SP said. “We have also set up a police outpost with an Assistant Sub Inspector to instil a sense of security and increase police activity,” he said.

According to police, the family has said that the woman was wearing old silver “ankle bangles” weighing 1.25 kg, apart from gold earrings.

Taking to Twitter, BJP leader and former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje said: “The ruthless murder of a woman in Jamwaramgarh’s Khatepura to loot her jewellery is more shameful for the state government than it is frightening for the common man. Congress government should answer that why law and order has become so helpless in the state?”

Former NDA Union Minister and Jaipur Rural MP Rajyavadhan Singh Rathore reached the spot Wednesday. “It is unfortunate that Rajasthan has reached the top spot in crimes against women,” he said.

Rajya Sabha MP Kirodi Lal Meena and BJP state president Satish Poonia, too, attacked the state government over the murder.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) said that it has written to the Rajasthan DGP and sought the arrest of all the accused and compensation for the deceased’s family. It asked the DGP to inform the NCW on the action taken at the earliest.
