The long wails of mourning women can be heard from afar as one approaches a house in a village near Jaipur.

A group of men sitting in front of the house speak in low voices. The cluster steadily grows as other residents join in, paying their respects in front of the photo of the woman in her thirties who was gangraped and murdered on April 23 while she was going to her parents’ house.

The anger is palpable among those at the condolence meet, with her family talking about a hurried cremation under “police pressure”.

“There were 8-9 police vehicles which accompanied us when the body of my sister-in-law arrived from Dausa. But the policemen insisted they would stay until the body was cremated. As per our traditions, the last rites are not conducted after sunset. But we were in a state of shock due to grief and so the cremation was conducted hurriedly on Monday night amid police presence, due to the pressure created upon us,” alleged the woman’s brother-in-law on Wednesday.

While the opposition BJP has alleged that the cremation was conducted without the family’s permission, Rajasthan DGP ML Lather has vehemently denied the accusation and said that the last rites were done after getting proper permission from the family.

On Monday night, Congress MLA from Chaksu Ved Prakash Solanki had said he had asked the police not to conduct the last rites in the night without the family’s approval.

The family members allege that there are more accused in the case and want them behind bars.

“So far, only two people have been arrested. There are more people involved in the crime who are yet to be arrested. We demand their arrest and a death penalty for all the accused,” said the brother-in-law.The woman, a mother of two, was going to visit her parents’ house in Dausa district on April 23. She had started from Jaipur on the morning of April 23 and after reaching a bus stand in Dausa, was walking towards her house.

Police say it was while she was walking that the accused offered her a ride in their car. They gangraped and murdered the woman. They dumped the body in a dry well. It was discovered by the police on April 24. Police’s preliminary investigation suggested that the accused tried to burn the body with acid and petrol in an effort to erase evidence.

Police said three other suspects are being questioned in the case.

“We have rounded up three more persons whose role is being investigated after the arrested accused named them,” said Raj Kumar Gupta, SP Dausa. So far the police have arrested two accused — Kaluram Meena (23) and Sanju Meena (18) — in the case.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has said that it will send a team to probe the case. The NCW has also written to the Rajasthan Police, asking it to immediately file an FIR in the matter.
