A day after he bought electric scooter, Vijayawada man killed in battery explosion

Kotakonda Siva Kumar,40, started charging the battery of his Boom Corbett 14 scooter in his living room before going to sleep on Friday night. The battery exploded around 3.30am on Saturday.

Days after an electric vehicle’s battery exploded taking the life of an 80-year-old man in Telangana’s Nizamabad district, a 40-year-old man died at Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday in a similar explosion in his living room. The victim, Kotakonda Siva Kumar (40), bought the scooter on Friday, according to police.

The explosion took place at Kumar’s home in Gulabi Thota around 3.30 am when the Boom Corbett 14 scooter’s battery was charging. NV Suryanarayana, station house officer of Suryaraopet police station in Vijayawada, told indianexpress.com that Kumar had started charging the battery around 10pm before going to sleep. As a result of the explosion, there was a fire in the living room and smoke quickly engulfed the place, he said.
