A 22-year-old Nizamabad Medical College student died by suicide in his hostel room on Friday, police said.

The student, M Sanath Kumar, was in his second year of MBBS program and was preparing for practical exams that begin tomorrow. His roommate, who went to another room to study on Thursday night, returned in the morning to find that Sanath locked himself from inside. He and other students kicked open the door and found Sanath’s body.

Nizamabad One Town Inspector D Vijay said that as per his teachers and batchmates Sanath was a good student. “He was not facing any issues with his studies or in college. According to his family there were no personal problems also. We are unable to understand why took this extreme step,’’ the inspector said.

Police and his teachers found a text message that he sent to himself in the early hours of Friday before he took his life. Dr B V Nagamohan Rao, Professor and HoD of Forensic Medicine and also the Chief Warden of the boys hostel where Sanath stayed, told The Indian Express that Sanath did not show any signs of being upset with his performance in the recently concluded written exams.

“In the message he said that after writing the first exam itself he had decided to end his life but after speaking with his parents and brother he stopped. He asked his brother who is abroad to return home and take care of his parents. Last night, he spent several hours studying for the practical exams and went back to the room in the wee hours. He was good in his studies, I cannot understand why he took his life. He also did not display any symptoms of depression or if he was upset about his performance in the exams,’’ Dr Rao said. Sanath’s father works in Singareni Collieries (SCCL) and the family lives in Centenary Colony, the SCCL’s township.

This is the second suicide this year in the Nizamabad medical college. On February 25, final-year MBBS student Dasari Harsha, 22, allegedly died by suicide. Although no suicide note has been recovered, friends and batchmates of the deceased informed the police that he was upset and stressed about his medical condition in the days leading to his death. Although no suicide note was recovered, police investigation revealed he was stressed due to his spinal cord issues and frequently suffered bouts of pains.

On February 22, Dr Dharavath Preethi, 26, a first-year PG student of Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) in Warangal, attempted suicide allegedly due to harassment from a senior student. On February 27, she died at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad where she had been undergoing treatment.
