A 10-year-old Royal Bengal Tiger at Hyderabad’s Nehru Zoological Park died Wednesday. The zoo authorities said that Joe succumbed to renal failure.
In a note, the zoo curator informed that the tiger was suffering from dyspepsia and loss of appetite and was undergoing treatment for the last six months.
Joe was born in the zoo to Nikhil and Aparna. The feline showed frequent loss of appetite and with changing diet patterns became lean. According to the curator, Joe died at 3 am Wednesday despite expert treatment and all efforts. The post-mortem examination concluded that the tiger died of renal failure, the statement said.
Another Royal Bengal tiger, 11-year-old Kadamba, died in 2020 due to cardiac arrest. The zoo now has 14 Royal Bengal tigers and six white tigers.
A few days ago, a 14-year-old cheetah, Abdullah, gifted to the zoo by a Saudi prince in 2013 died of cardiac arrest. Abdullah’s partner Hiba, also gifted by the prince, died of paraplegia in 2020 at the age of eight after suffering “lameness in limbs” for three years. The zoo has no cheetahs now.
