The UAE-headquartered multinational retailer Lulu Group Monday announced the commencement of its operations in Telangana and declared an investment of Rs 3500 crore in the state over the next five years. The Lulu Group and the Telangana government had signed an MoU at Davos last year and several rounds of discussions resulted in the investments today, Lulu Group’s chairman and managing director M A Yusuff Ali said here.
Ali spoke of the group’s Rs 3500 crore investment through a soon-to-be-inaugurated mall in Hyderabad and another destination mall, and a logistic hub that they plan to construct. He also committed to procuring paddy from the state for export to the middle eastern countries apart from setting up a fish processing plant and a meat processing plant.
“As a part, we are starting a 100 percent export-oriented food processing unit that will procure fruits, vegetables, millets, pulses and spices from Telangana exclusively for export. For our operation in retail, with an investment of Rs 300 crore, we will be opening our Lulu shopping mall and hypermarket in Hyderabad where 2000 people will be employed. With another Rs 2500 crore, we are planning another destination mall in Hyderabad and will start construction soon. Also, we are going to construct a logistic hub, only for procurement, grading and packaging,” Ali said.
Industries Minister K T Rama Rao said the state, through various initiatives and schemes, has already ushered in a green revolution (agriculture) and is in the process of four more revolutions, namely blue (inland fisheries), white (dairy), pink (meat processing) and yellow (oil palms). Adding that Telangana is geographically in the middle of the country, he urged Ali to set up their group’s logistical base in Telangana and spread the word about immense opportunities in Telangana.
A note from the Minister’s office said Rs 200 crore will be spent on an export-oriented modern integrated meat processing plant at Chengicherla with a production capacity of 60 Tonnes per day. The project will generate employment for more than 2,500 personnel and commercial operations are expected to start at the facility in the next 18 months.
For the first Lulu shopping mall and hypermarket, the group has taken over and rebranded the erstwhile Manjeera Mall spread across 5 lakh sq foot area and promised to offer an international shopping experience. In India, the group has a presence in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Bengaluru, Lucknow, and Coimbatore.
