Telangana Chief Minister and Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) supremo K Chandrashekar Rao launched a national political party, Bharat Rashtra Samithi, at 1:19 pm on Wednesday during a conclave of party leaders, ministers, MPs, MLAs, MLCs and district-level coordinators at the party headquarters Telangana Bhavan in Hyderabad.

This move made the TRS, which was launched in April, 2000, a national party.

TRS activists who gathered outside the party headquarters burst into celebration soon after the announcement.

On the occasion, over 280 party executive members, MLAs, and MPs passed a resolution to merge the TRS with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). KCR will soon speak about his future plans and the role he intends to play in national politics.

JD (S) leader and former Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, who arrived in Hyderabad Tuesday night along with 20 of his party MLAs, was present at Telangana Bhavan when KCR launched the party. Two MPs belonging to Tamil Nadu’s Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), including Dalit leader Thirumavalavan, were also present on the occasion. KCR, TRS working president KT Rama Rao and others cordially invited Kumaraswamy, Thirumavalavan and others upon their arrival.

News agency PTI spoke to a JD(S) functionary who said the new outfit would be a “conglomeration of various regional parties,” that are fighting the BJP in their respective states.

“The idea is to put up a united fight against the BJP. Basically, it’s a combination of various regional parties who want to rise above their political differences and come together,” PTI quoted the JD(S) leader as saying.

Thirumavalavan, on his Twitter handle, said he is in Hyderabad on the invitation of Rao for the launch of BRS. He congratulated Rao for his efforts to turn his attention on the national level. The VCK is an ally of the DMK, which is in power in Tamil Nadu.

Earlier in the day, the chief minister hosted a breakfast for Kumaraswamy and others. Ministers T Harish Rao and Vemula Prashanth Reddy, MP Santosh Kumar, TRS MLAs, MLCs, and other public representatives were present on the occasion.

As the EC announced Monday that the bypoll for Telangana’s Munugode Assembly constituency would be held on November 3, there was some uncertainty in the TRS about Wednesday’s meeting. However, KCR released a statement stating that the TRS’s general body meeting scheduled for 11 am on October 5 would be held as per schedule.

According to PTI, a festive mood has gripped TRS workers with a Warangal-based party leader distributing chickens and liquor to 200 workers, wishing a grand success to KCR in his bid to go beyond Telangana. After renaming the party, TRS leadership plans to reach out to people by pitching its “Telangana good governance model” to venture into national politics and effectively take on the BJP.
